Five reasons why you should get tested for STIs

By Nilmaris Díaz

What areSTIs?

These aresexuallytransmittedinfectionsthat are passed from one person to another during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. STIs are very common and sometimes go unnoticed because many people do not have symptoms, but they can cause irreversible damage if not detected early. Others may cause mild or very severe symptoms. This is why it is important to get tested for STIs on a regular basis.

Getting tested isn't complicated. In most cases, these tests are quick, effective, painless, and free. Although many providers don't include them in routine screenings, if you are or have been sexually active, it never hurts to ask for them. Here are some reasons why you should get tested for STIs:

1. Check the status

The only way to know if you have an STI is to get tested. That way, if any of the results are positive, you can start treatment and find ways to prevent future infections.

2. Take care of your health and your partner's

By getting tested for STIs, you are taking responsibility for your sexual health and recognizing the importance of protecting your sexual partners. You can transmit or contract an STI during a single unprotected sexual encounter, so it is always recommended to use barrier protection.

3. Start treatment as soon as possible

The good news is that all STIs are treatable, and most can be cured with medication—such as syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.

4. They often have no symptoms

STIs often have no visible symptoms or only very mild ones, so many people don't see the need to get tested or see a doctor. Although most STIs are curable, many can lead to complications and even affect other organs in the body.

5. Getting tested is quick and easy

To get tested for STIs, simply visit a health care provider of your choice whom you trust. The clinical staff will ask you standard questions, but they won't judge you based on your answers.
