Changing your eating habits isn't easy: Give it a try!

By Alana Marrero González, LND, MHSN

Eating habits are conscious, collective, and repetitive behaviors that lead us to select, consume, and use foods whose purpose is to improve our quality of life. Changing our eating habits is not easy. When we were children, our parents reminded us every morning that we had to brush our teeth and take a bath. After a while, we all knew what we had to do. We persevered with patience and consistency.

That's why it's so important to assess where you are right now. Assessing your progress is a fundamental part of continuing to improve your lifestyle. Adopting new habits requires effort, and it's normal to feel overwhelmed at times. That's okay. To all of you who have started making changes to your lifestyle, to all of you who are following a meal plan established with your nutritionist, I urge you to evaluate your progress. It's not all about the numbers on the scale and body measurements. There are so many other important things we need to assess!

If we don't evaluate our progress, it can cause us to stagnate and lose motivation. But if we stop to look at where we were and see all the changes that have been made and the improvements that have been achieved, our motivation will continue and even increase. For some people, it's easy to assess their progress because they write it down, keep a journal of their changes, and this could work for you. I am very visual, and photos help me compare my before and after.

In the future, when you have achieved your goal or objective, you will have all those details you wrote down, all the photos of the process, and all those things will remind you why you are there, the effort you made to achieve it, and they will make you stronger so you don't back down. Assess how many eating habits you have changed so far this year.
