What should you do if the condom gets stuck inside?

By: Myrna Liz Rodríguez

Accidents happen , and condoms can slip off during sex. Sometimes this is because they’re too big or too small, or because the person didn’t remove the condom immediately after ejaculation. The latter causes the condom to become slippery, slip out of place, and slide off the penis.

If this happens to you, don't panic—today we're offering some tips on how to properly remove the condom from the anus or vagina.

The first thing you should do is:
  • Take it down as soon as possible!
  • You should stop having sex and wash your hands thoroughly so you don't introduce bacteria into your body.
  • The longer the condom remains inside the vagina or rectum, the higher the risk of infection.
  • If this happens, the condom will not be effective as a method of birth control or as protection against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so it is important to consult your doctor.
People with vaginas
  • When you sit on the toilet, spread your legs.
  • Push the condom out and squeeze your pelvic muscles.
  • You can also stand in front of the toilet and rest one foot on the seat to remove it with your fingers.
Front:
  • Push as if you were having a bowel movement to help guide the condom in. If that doesn't work, try inserting a finger to gently pull it in.
  • It may feel slippery or hard to grip, but do not insert any objects. If you are unable to remove it, a nurse or doctor will need to assist you.
  • Remember to unroll the condom and check that it's intact; if not, you'll need to look for the missing parts.
If something gets stuck inside, watch for the following symptoms:
  • Discharge (which may be foul-smelling in some cases) from the vagina or rectum
  • Unusual odor in the area
  • Fever
  • Itching, rash, swelling, or redness in the area
  • Pain or discomfort when urinating or having a bowel movement

If condoms are your only method of birth control, it is advisable to use emergency contraception.
