Get moving for a healthy heart

 Alana Marrero Gonzalez, RN, MSN

How about getting more active this new year? This would be one of the small changes you can implement daily to improve your health and have a healthy heart.

When you move, you exercise, and exercise not only improves your health, but also serves as a treatment for many chronic diseases. For this reason, the American College of Sport Medicine developed the "Exercise is your medicine" initiative, whose mission is to promote physical activity and exercise as an essential part of disease prevention and treatment.

February is Heart Disease Awareness Month. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, and many of these deaths can be prevented with a healthy diet and lifestyle that includes movement and physical exercise. Regular exercise will significantly improve your health. It will also help you:

  • Improve blood lipid profile (cholesterol and triglycerides)
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Increase your bone mass and reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis
  • Reducing the risk of coronary heart disease
  • Increase insulin sensitivity, thereby helping to maintain controlled blood sugar levels.
  • Reduce your risk of having a stroke
  • Promote blood pressure level control
  • Reduce the likelihood of developing diabetes mellitus by almost 50%.
  • Improve anxiety, insomnia, and stress
  • Improve symptoms of depression and promote positive thinking
  • Boosting self-esteem and generating an almost instantaneous feeling of happiness

Don't wait any longer! Make exercise and a balanced diet your best medicine.
